I.                   INTRODUCTION

A lot of prestige universities are now scattered in the Philippines offering different courses and facilities. These universities are well known because of their quality teaching that most of the parents want for their offspring. And together with those hundreds of universities is De La Salle University. It has been 100 years since the De La Salle University started teaching in the Philippines, the first campus was established year 1911 in Manila and since then De La Salle University continues to grow and expand to give the children in the Philippines a world class education and to reach every children in every corner of the Philippines.

The latest university of De La Salle is now located in Biñan, in the land donated by the family of the late National artist of the Philippines of Architecture Leandro V. Locsin, the campus was named De La Salle Canlubang Leandro V. Locsin Campus in honor of the Locsin family.

De La Salle University Science and Technology Complex, Leandro V. Locsin Campus also known as De La Salle Canlubang started to offer their services since 2003. But the existence of the school is quite vague due to its location and address. Since last year 2012 De La Salle Canlubang was successfully merged to De La Salle Taft giving the STC a chance to be as prestige as other La Salle Universities do. A great school with an interesting history, this paper will help us to learn more about the history of De La Salle Canlubang and how it started.

II.                How De La Salle University Started in the Philippines

The Brothers of the Christian Schools, officially known as Fratres Scholarum Christianarum or FSC, is a congregation dedicated to the teachings espoused by St. John Baptist De La Salle.
The first De La Salle School in the Philippines was opened on June 16, 1911 along General Luna, Paco, Manila at the request of the Archbishop of Manila. In 1921, the school was moved to its present site on Taft Avenue. Unable to accommodate requests for admission to the elementary grades, they had to revert an earlier policy not to expand. To date, they have spread out to different provinces. The Brothers have since opened in Greenhills, Antipolo, Lipa, Bacolod, Ilagan, Dasmarinas, and Alabang. They have also undertaken supervision of some schools in Manila, Cavite, Bataan, Cebu, Bukidnon, Surigao del Sur, Negros Occidental, Masbate, Capiz, and Ozamis. Today they are known as De La Salle Supervised Schools.

III.             How De La Salle Canlubang Started

Around 1977, the idea of having another La Salle School, this time in the Laguna area was conceptualized. This was when Architect Lindy Locsin, then a member of the DLSU board of Trustees, offered to donate several hectares of his family's land to La Salle. In 1997, this generous donation of the Locsins was realized. La Salle Purchased an additional contiguous hectares making De La Salle Canlubang a sprawling fifty hectare campus.
Laguna is fast becoming the country's industrial and technological site. Its large, industrial companies presently make it the home of the first Science Technological Park. In response to the ever-quickening pace of scientific and technological development of modern times, the concept of a three-level science and technology oriented school took root. Hence, De La Salle University Science & Technology Complex was established in June 2003 in order to address the educational concerns of our nation with its youth as its strength. They are envisioned to be grounded on science and technological skills cloaked in the ideals of St. La Salle as an answer to the demands and challenges of the 21st century.
The Integrated school opened its doors to 240 students from preschool to grade 4 and grade 8 (second year high school) during its first year. The curriculum adapts to the science education as its basis. Science emphasizes hands-on exploration and direct experience with the natural world; thereby

IV.             De La Salle Canlubang Logo

Since year 2003 up to year 2012, De La Salle Canlubang used this logo to represent the school. The image in the middle of the logo symbolizes the Science and Technology.

Since This year, 2013 De La Salle Canlubang is
officially STC and changed its logo to this.

V.                SUMMARY OF INTERVIEWS OLD LA SALLE CANLUBANG

Base on those who have graduated La Salle Canlubang, they said La Salle Canlubang before is a big school with few students, approximately 100 college students. It’s quite normal before because of the ambiguity of its location, De La Salle Canlubang is really located in Biñan Laguna, and not in Calubang.

De La Salle Canlubang, prior to the incoming integration, was a blooming educational community. It always had the laid-back atmosphere that could be felt by students, teachers, and staff alike. The location of the campus always presented a calm and collected haven for nurturing learners and teachers alike, and also the air and ambiance of DLSC is good for studying, fresh air and green pasture.

VI.             THOUGHTS ABOUT MERGING

A. STUDENTS:

1.      I don’t see any any changes.
-          John Ernest Ramos, BSCS -4

2.      Students became more active and the campus became more lively. We can now see students from taft and STC working together as one, just like what we have seen last student leader elections.
-          Paolo Eduardo L. Garces, BSIS-3

3.      The upcoming merger presents an oppurtunity for the students of DLSC/DLSU-STC to get a feel of the high pressure atmosphere environment presented by the Manila campus and, in the same way, lets the DLSU-M students feel the calm and open-ended atmosphere presented by the STC campus. More or less it's the possibility of stretching and expanding the learning potential of both student bodies that is presenting itself on the upcoming merger.
-          John Zaraspe, BSECE-3

4.      The Merging is okay, it gives different opportunities to the student, although it creates a grey area or line between STC students and Taft students. We can see that although working together they’re still moving as 2 different school not as 1. But we hope as time pass by, we can overcome this and together work as 1.
-          Olive Marie Sevila, BSIS-4

5.      The merging was quite expected, in my opinion, but not this soon. I thought it would happen in a couple more years. Nonetheless, it has changed the school that was once DLSC. With one of the biggest changes happening in the merging about to happen (the DLSU-STC Government), it was then that I noticed that what DLSU-M will bring in DLSU-STC might be able to awaken the students even more.
-          John Vincent De Borja

6.      I hate it All organizations in Canlubang might be forced to merge With Taft
-          Ian De Jesus

7.      I'm very pro-merging. It'll open up a lot of opportunities for students from both campuses.
-          Kim Blanquera, BSCS-2

B. EMPLOYEE:
We didn’t manage to get a proper interview with any of the employee but each and everyone of them have a positive response about the merging, though merging requires a lot of changes they’re ready to aide DLSU-STC to achieve its improved goals.
According to Ms. Oclida, it has a postive and negative effect. Postivie effect will be bigger market for La Salle. More students will have a chance to study in La Salle. Students from laguna doesnt need to go to Manila anymore. Negative effect will be Taft students maybe does not want to be moved here in Canlubang. Somehow it will be also hassle for them to travel for a class.
VII.          SUMMARY OF THOUGHTS : MEGING

Hearing the response of the interviewees, I can understand the way they feel towards the so called merging of DLSU TAFT and DLS-Canlubang. Some view it negatively while others are positive about it. Most of the negative reactions / responses from them are that DLSU-STC is now dependent on DSLU TAFT unlike before the campus is independent in participating in any curricular and non-curricular activities. One this is the possibility of dissolving the existing organizations of DLSC and merge it to the organizations from Taft, this is quite unfair for the members of the organization who prove themselves worthy to have the organization.
As for the positive responses, they’re happy about it because the merging will open more opportunities to the student of DLSC, the merging will also give a new experience for the students socially, educationally, and spiritually. Where this experience is necessary for the growth of a new leader that can help our society.
